James M. Winchell
Instrumental Music Director

Mr. Winchell grew up in San Diego, California, and moved to Orange County to complete his bachelor's degree in Music Education at Cal State Fullerton.   During his time there, he performed as part of the University Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensembles, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Brass Quintet, and University Band.  He has also performed in various other orchestras, bands, and brass ensembles around Southern California.  He has worked as a music coach and marching instructor at many schools throughout San Diego and Orange Counties.  During the 2012-2013 school year, he taught at Cathedral City High School and developed a reputation for achieving high standards of musical excellence with his students.

Mr. Winchell joined the Garden Grove High School staff in 2013.  He envisions developing the GGHS Instrumental Music program around the cornerstones of musical excellence, unity, integrity, and legacy.  Outside of school, he enjoys traveling, photography, and He now performs regularly as principal trombonist of the Southern California Philharmonic, in addition to directing and maintaining the reputation of the GGHS Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, Marching, Concert, and Symphonic Bands.
